Punch-Out
1984
Nintendo
Most of us remember the NES version, with Mike Tyson as the final boss. But this arcade version is the original, with Mr. Sandman as the final fighter. Also, in this version you play as a wireframe character instead of the tiny Little Mac introduced in the NES version. What people may not know is that this game is really a sports-themed puzzle game. You can't just button mash your way to victory- you have to choose your shots wisely and counter-punch, otherwise you'll be the one on the canvas.
Story
You are (green-haired challenger,) a new boxer making your way through the WVBA rankings. Along the way you face a slew of enemies: Glass Joe, Piston Huricane, Bald Bull, Kid Quick, Pizza Pasta, and finally Mr. Sandman. Some of these fighters differ from the NES version (no Don Flamenco, King Hippo, Soda Popinski, etc). Take on your opponents and learn their patterns to earn your championship. If you look closely, you might even see Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong Jr. in the audience.
Tips & Strategies
When Piston Hurricane steps to the side, get ready. As soon as he comes back, hit him in the stomach- if you time it right, you'll get an instant knowckdown.
Watch your opponent's eyes- when eyes flash yellow, they are about to punch.
Once you fill up that KO meter, hit that big blue Knock Out Blow button!
This game marked the debut of acclaimed composer Koji Kondo.
